The Driver Push for ELDs

Did you feel the ground shift recently? What you felt was a paradigm shift on the truck driver’s perspective of an electronic logging device (ELD). Yes that’s what we said, a shift in the perspective of the driver on the value of an ELD. For drivers employed by ELD early adopters, they have become accustomed to using the technology to improve their quality of life and now seek it in their prospective employers’ companies as well.
With the disheartening news of the driver shortage, the media coverage on the pay issues within the industry, and increasing regulations, trucking companies now must seek ways to make truck driving a career choice, not a job. Part of doing this involves getting drivers home for the weekends, reducing time spent on paperwork and not the road, etc. Technological advances that are already available are helping companies to find those changes that can make the driver’s life better.
Hearing drivers say, “Do you have ELDs because I am not interested in a job if you do not” is a distinct shift that we never believed would happen. What’s driving this change? Ease of use of devices, no paper forms to fill out, schedules are normalized, less driver fatigue while driving because of more rest and the stress of making a delivery “regardless of hours” is greatly reduced. We all seek a better work environment and our drivers are no different. Give them a tool they can believe in and they will adopt it.
Drivers are not pushing back; they are stepping forward, and improving their work life with a tool that can actually make them better employees. Your drivers are taking the wheel….are you?
